Hi Mike,
I am afraid my cryptic message about changing my title for my
presentation at Chicago may have been misunderstood. I was
and am exploring ideas about novelty and creativity from
a Vygotskian framework. That is what I meant to say. I find
that reading Vygotsky and so much of the recent truly innovative
work (including Wertsch, Rogoff, Cole, Engestrom, etc. ) is
generative--far from fossilized. The issue I am hoping to address
is a response to some critics (for instance, Cobb and Yackel), who
see Vygotskian approaches as focusing on transmission rather than
transformation. Again, I am sorry for the misunderstanding, my
objective is highlighting some aspects of Vygotsdy's ideas which
are close to my interests in creativity,
Vera
