terrific post dewey!
as i see it, my thinking was also a bit too truncated. by putting
all the emphasis on bad faith, i neglected two important groups --
1) folks who are simply deluded about what they see or what they
want, or both, and 2) folks who refuse to discuss issues with you
because the consequences of you being correct are totally unaccept-
able to them.
i think that neither of these groups are engaged in inquiry per se;
one group has bowed out of the process, and the other group is try-
ing to protect something they value. the second group are by far
the most interesting, because an important part of the inquiry
process is the set of consequences that changed practices lead to.
any thoughts on how to work these into the inquiry process, without
it being a power struggle?

ps the anti-abortion folk clearly belong to group 2 but, for that
matter, so do the folks in greenpeace and the group of scientists
who opposed the building, testing and use of the atomic bomb...
