About oppositional behavior being a "symptom":
I think this is where my vestigial Marxist thinking shows up, or as I might
reframe it now, systemic thinking. Any organization of practices where
participants move among different cultural, political, and economic activity
spheres is going to involve some tensions, leaks, breaks, and what not.
Oppositional behavior in this respect can be a "symptom" in that it
indicates where these are. I'm probably quite wrong to suggest, though,
that any particular behavior is "only a symptom." I apologize for my
half-bakedness there.
