I generally agree with Rolfe's points, esp. re Edelman. For those
who would like a thorough philosophical and AI discussion of
these issues from an anti-representationalist view, I recommend
the work of Mark H. Bickhard, now or soon available in a thick
book, _Foundational Issues in Artifical Intelligence and Cognitive
Science_ by Bickhard and Loren Terveen. My impression is that
cognitive science is also coming apart from the inside, as well
as being hammered at by social-cultural and situated models.
Connectionism, PDP, Maturana-Varela autopoiesis arguments,
system theory self-organization models, etc. all seem to be
symptoms of the general dissatisfaction with a 'we use models
of what's out there' approach. JAY.
